Steve graduated in theology from Southampton University in 1990 with a dissertation on the blessing of same-sex unions. At that time the Church of England struggled to cope with non-heterosexualities. Three years later he was awarded a masters in social sciences, again by Southampton University, for a dissertation on UK reactions to the European Social Charter. In 1999, he was awarded a PGCE by London University and worked for a short time teaching religious education at secondary level, before moving to the transport industry in 2006. In 2023 he published “Bisexual Relationship in Church”, following research at the Universities of Winchester and Wales Trinity St David, begun in 2016.

Steve is professed in the Single Life and has taken a vow of consecrated eremitical erotic celibacy. He draws inspiration from an authenticity rooted in an understanding of the Liberal Catholic Church's 'widest measure of intellectual liberty and respect for the individual conscience', the Orthodox Churches' mystical spirituality, the Roman catechism's conscience clauses and the 'reason' of the 'English' church's ethos of 'scripture, tradition and reason'.
